Down the Rabbit Hole

  1. HI Jonathan-

We had a very intense and good visit to the installation. Katie from YYAM also talked a while after we all came out- about some of the statistics and some of the other things they work on as an organization. The first student to speak about it afterwards said that she felt like she couldn't breathe in there. The other professor with us was very close to tears and everyone generally felt shocked about this being such a common and ongoing practice. There is another film one of the students mentioned called Young Girls or something- which deals with this and came out recently. A lot of people questioned why the police weren't more able to shut the massage parlors down- so we chad a discussion about that, and about containment zones in general.

I personally also felt the darkness and sickness of it- mostly through the surfaces you presented- the walls particularly got to me- and I spent some time wondering how much you did to make them look this way- the pill bottles and general feel of destitution and inability to make a habitable environment made me feel pretty sick. I wondered about the function of the videos a bit- I thought the one of the girl in the playground was really powerful because of the way you weren't allowed to see her face- but wondered about the relationship of that to the crib- was it supposed to be her crib or her child's -and what if the videos switched places-
As a Mom of course its totally unbearable. I was not aware of how much this goes on either.

It was also a powerful experience for the students as many of them were uncomfortable in the neighborhood in general. we went from the forest to your piece and there was a fire on Ellis too- so they really got this very quick, dichotomos and intense experience. I imagine i will hear more about that next week after people have digested it a bit.

Thanks Jonathan. I am going to look at those websites.
